Named after the creek that runs through the neighborhood on the east, Shingle Creek is located in northwest Minneapolis, within Hennepin County. The creek itself got its name when the county’s first shingle mill was built near its mouth in 1852.

Located in the 55430 zip code area, Shingle Creek is bordered by 53rd Avenue on the north and 49th Avenue on the south. The community’s western border is created by Xerxes Avenue North, and Humboldt Avenue North creates the eastern border. Most of the housing in Shingle Creek is owner-occupied, and the community population was 3,170 in 2000, according to census data.

Twin Lakes and Twin Lakes Beach Park are located to the west, and a handful of smaller parks and lakes are located within neighboring communities. For residents who like to enjoy all the bounty that Mother Nature has to offer, Shingle Creek is situated in a near-perfect location, with plenty of parkland and natural beauty all around. The Mississippi is less than one mile to the east of the community’s border. The largest golf course in the area is the Columbia Creek Golf Course, located across the river at 3300 Central Avenue NE.

Shingle Creek is located close to a number of major roadways, including Beltway 100, I-94 and State Highway 52, which makes it easy to get to nearby retail shops and dining establishments. To the north, at 5900 Shingle Creek Parkway, is Brookdale Square, one of the larger shopping centers and theaters in the immediate area.

Schools in the neighborhood include Jenny Lind/Olson Upper Elementary at 1601 51st Avenue North and Shingle Creek School near North Oliver Avenue.
