Afton Oaks is a residential community of approximately 525 homes inside the Interstate 610 Loop in Houston, Texas. Afton Oaks is located between Uptown Houston and Highland Village. The neighborhood is enclosed on the north by Westheimer Road, on the east by the Union Pacific railroad tracks, on the south by Highway 59 (the Southwest Freeway,) and on the west by the Interstate 610 Loop.

In the early 1950s, this farming and ranching land was primed for development, and many of the original homes remain today. Construction of newer two-story brick and stucco homes began in the 1980s. By 2000, some older homes received renovation or faced demolition.

River Oaks is a popular, affluent community located in the center of Houston, Texas. River Oaks is located inside the Interstate 610 Loop and between Downtown Houston and Uptown and north of the Upper Kirby District. The River Oaks community spans 1,100 acres and was established in the 1920s. The community is contained on the north by Buffalo Bayou, on the east by South Shepherd Drive, on the west by Willowick Road, and on the south by Westheimer Road. River Oaks Boulevard runs through the center of the community and is lined on both sides by mansions and estates set back from the street. The two-mile area encompasses approximately 1,400 primarily detached single-family homes.

The River Oaks community has served as a national model for community planning and is considered one of the wealthiest communities in all of Texas. Home prices in the River Oaks section can range from $1 million to over $20 million. River Oaks is also home to the River Oaks Country Club with a golf course designed by Donald Ross. Every detail was addressed in the planning of this community, from the oak trees, shrubbery, and flowers. Originally, the architectural style was limited to English Tudor and American Colonial.
