In the southern part of the neighborhood, a strip mall lines East 36th Street North with stores such as Ralph’s Menswear; a church establishment; and Jack’s Memory Chapel, a locally owned funeral home. Daily necessities are available at Save-a-Lot Food Mart, a few minutes’ drive to the southeast.

Public parks are plentiful in the Walt Whitman area. Anderson Park, Lincoln Park, and Crawford Park are all within walking or biking distance from the neighborhood. Lake Yahola is also close by, offering a place to swim, boat or fish. The park features grilling and picnic stations on its shores.

East 36th Street North, a major Tulsa thoroughfare, is the southern border for Walt Whitman, which is in the 74106 zip code. North Lansing Place branches off as the eastern boundary of the neighborhood, while the western border, North Garrison Avenue, runs parallel a few blocks from it. East 39th Street North is the northern border for the neighborhood.

There are several schools surrounding the community. Grade schools include Whitman Elementary School to the north and Hawthorne Elementary to the south, both part of the Tulsa Public Schools District. New Concept Preparatory is a private, alternative school for students through third grade.

Tulsa Technology Center sits to the east of Walt Whitman. This specialized school educates high school and mature students in the areas of science and technology and offers career training, skills courses, and certificate programs.
