Hampton Apartments for Rent(show city information)
Separated from Norfolk by the Hampton Roads harbor, one of the world’s largest natural harbors, Hampton is a terrific seaside city with a strong, diverse economy and miles of gorgeous shoreline. It is the location of Old Point Comfort, located on a point at the tip of the Virginia Peninsula. Old Point Comfort was named by the original Jamestown settlers, who arrived there in 1607. Captain Christopher Newport said the channel “put them in good comfort,” and the point formed the beginning of the Virginia colony.
Hampton Roads is the location of the historic landmark Hampton University, built in 1868 at the end of the Civil War to help educated freedmen. One of the university’s first students was Booker T. Washington, who attended the school in 1872 and later returned to become a teacher.
Another historic location in Hampton is St. John’s Episcopal Church, which was founded in 1610. The current church was built in 1728, and the Communion silver still in use dates back to 1618 – making the oldest continuously-used church silver in the US. The church also features some 13th-century stained glass brought from St. Helena Church in the UK where Captain John Smith was baptized. Hampton was the location of the first free public school in the country, the Syms-Eaton Academy, established in 1634.
While the history of this amazing city is breathtaking, Hampton is also a modern city with plenty to see and do. Hampton is home to Langley Air Force Base and is the center of military aviation training, research, and development – and has been for almost 100 years. After choosing your Hampton apartment for rent, be sure to check out the city’s many points of interest, including the beautiful Downtown Hampton Historic District, Fort Monroe, Hampton Coliseum, and Peninsula Town Center.
