Lee Walker Heights is a small neighborhood located just south of downtown Asheville, North Carolina. It is composed mainly of apartment complexes located on a 12.5 acre lot right off Biltmore Avenue. The neighborhood was named after Walter Smith Lee, who served as the principal of Stephens-Lee High School from 1910 until his death in 1934, and after doctor J.W. Walker, a tuberculosis specialist.
Historically, Lee Walker Heights was created in 1950 when the housing authority started its first low income housing project. On opening day on May 25th, 1951, 350 applications were presented for the 96 apartments. Today, Lee Walker Heights is a public housing complex offering convenient access near businesses, hospitals, retail outlets, and stores.
Parents of school age children will appreciate the vicinity to several schools. Asheville Middle School is less than half a mile away just off South French Broad Ave, whereas New City Christian School is less than a mile away off Walton Street, Randolph Learning Center is a little more than a mile away on Montford Avenue as is Isaac Dickson Elementary School off Hill Street. Asheville High School, part of Asheville’s City School District is also nearby on McDowell Street.
Outdoor enthusiasts will certainly enjoy easy access to White Flawn Reservoir. Here fishermen will find an abundance of yellow bass, white bass and rock bass. Wilson’s RV Park is also available for those visiting the area. Murray Hill Park is one of Asheville’s newest parks, featuring a walking trail, pavilion, several benches, and pic-nic tables for residents and visitors to enjoy.
