Fort Sam Houston, established in 1845, was the first post established in Alamo City. The post, originally named the Post at San Antonio, became Fort Sam Houston in 1890. Named for the first President of the Republic of Texas, the fort is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark District. It is one of the Army’s oldest installations and contains more than 900 historic buildings, making it one of the largest and most significant historic military installations.
The Fort is home to several command headquarters, including the Army Medical Command and the Army Medical Department as well as the United States Army North and United States Army South. Fort Sam Houston is considered the largest and most important military medical training facility in the world.
Located in northeast San Antonio, the community of Alamo Heights is a great place to find an apartment near Fort Sam Houston. Alamo Heights, once an independent town, is now part of the San Antonio metro area. It is located about five miles north of downtown.
