Cambridgeport Neighborhood
Cambridgeport is a neighborhood in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is located along the Charles River, north of Boston. Vassar Street defines the border to the east, River Street to the west, Massachusetts Ave. to the north, and the Charles River to the south. Cambridgeport is adjacent to MIT, but does not include the college in the neighborhood.
Cambridgeport is densely populated with many small streets filled with both single and multi-family houses. Overall, there are a wide variety of residences in the neighborhood, including detached homes, semi-detached, townhouses, row houses, condos, and apartments. Cambridgeport is considered a good family neighborhood with a strong neighborhood association.
Central Square is the active shopping area of Cambridgeport. A T stop in the square brings a lot of traffic to the area. A former industrial section runs along the southeastern edge of the neighborhood.
Magazine Beach House hides one of the gems of Cambridge, a free pool that offers great views of Boston and the Charles River. The beach house may not be fancy, but it is clean and cool with a full time lifeguard on duty. Grass surrounds the pool, making it an ideal place for a picnic.
Cambridgeport is also an historic neighborhood. Fort Washington Park has a fortification commissioned by George Washington that dates back to the Revolutionary War. Fort Washington is considered a great dog park as well.
Many stores and restaurants are in the neighborhood too, including Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, Trader Joes, Walgreens, and Payless Shoes.
Cambridgeport is famous for being the home of the Fig Newton and Ben Affleck.
