Bayard Apartments for Rent(hide neighborhood information)
Bayard, FL (in zip code 32256), is an historic community located between the cities of St. Augustine and Jacksonville, at the intersection of Old St. Augustine Road and U.S. Highway 1 in the Jacksonville metro area. It was developed in 1884 as a depot town for the transportation of goods from the area’s sawmills and turpentine distilleries. After the development of US 1 in 1934, Bayard continued to grow as a stopping point for vacationers traveling through the state. Bayard has a rich history and many historic sites.
Though it is growing rapidly, Bayard maintains its small-town charms. Live oaks draped in Spanish moss, horses grazing in front lawns and cracker-style, tin-roofed houses still dot this small neighborhood’s landscape. The pace is slower here (even US 1 reduces its speed from 65 to 45 mph through Bayard), but modern conveniences, such as restaurants, shops and service providers, are accumulating in the newly built shopping plazas that line US 1 and Old St. Augustine Road.
Bayard’s prime location makes it a natural choice for people who want to live in the center of the action without the fast pace and traffic congestion of city life. Bayard is less than 30 minutes from the historic downtown attractions of St. Augustine and less than 20 minutes from Jacksonville’s The Avenues Mall, movie theaters, and golf courses. But you don’t have to leave the neighborhood to find things to do. Bayard is home to many newer developments. Flagler Center, Genovar Park, Bayard Antique Village (once the popular Bayard Beautyrest Cabins, built in 1926), The Shoppes of Bayard, the legendary Bayard Rooster biker bar, and much more offer everyday destinations within the neighborhood.
