The Fisk/Meharry neighborhood, located near the center of Nashville, is one of the city’s districts steeped in history. The legendary institutions of higher learning, Fisk University and Meharry Medical College lend their names to this busy part of the city.
Fisk University was incorporated in 1867 with the purpose of providing a high level college education to all without regard to race. Today the institution is best known for the Fisk Jubilee Singers, the student member gospel choir that travels the world to perform. Fisk’s Jubilee Hall, with its grand gothic architecture, hosts speakers of world renown including former U.S. Presidents and business industry giants.
Across the street from Fisk is Meharry Medical College. The institution was created to allow college students to become medical doctors without restrictions based on race. The school encompasses a dental school, graduate school and a school of allied health. Meharry is respected for its focus on public health disparities.
Both schools’ campuses sit adjacent to Jefferson Street, a main road through downtown Nashville which was once the center of the city’s vibrant jazz and blues scenes. While those establishments have disappeared, the citizens of Nashville commemorate those days with the annual Jazz and Blues festival.
The Fisk/Meharry neighborhood is convenient to a variety of shops and businesses, including the Farmer’s Market and the Bicentennial Mall and State Park. The park celebrates the state’s history organically with waterfalls and a wide open green space. These buildings are walking distance from the State Capitol building in downtown Nashville.
The Fisk/Meharry neighborhood boasts one of the state’s best performing public high schools, Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet School with its focus on health sciences and engineering. A branch of the Nashville Public Library is located within walking distance of the school.
