Founded in 1898, Northeastern University is a private, coeducational research university located in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts. Northeastern boasts leadership in worldwide experiential learning, urban engagement, interdisciplinary research and a broad mix of experience-based education programs. Northeastern offers a range of undergraduate programs in eight colleges and schools, and more than 125 programs at the graduate level.

The University is a founding member of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. In 2010, Northeastern officially adopted a climate-action strategy called “Sustainable Action Plan: Roadmap towards Carbon Neutrality,” for which the Sustainable Endowments Institute awarded the school one of the highest ratings in North America and the highest of any Boston-based university.

Northeastern is classified as a “high research activity” university by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The university’s faculty members have earned international recognition for their achievements. Several Guggenheim Fellows have been associated with Northeastern; other distinguished faculty include a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award” winner, a former Democratic nominee for President of the United States and a Pulitzer Prize winner.

In 2011, Northeastern received 43,000 undergraduate applications for the fall semester, the largest for any private university in the United States. It is considered one of the fastest-rising schools in the nation. In fact, the school ranked second on the list of “Up-and-coming National Universities” by US News and World Report, who also name Northeastern a Tier 1 National Research University. The school has ranked first for four consecutive years by the Princeton Review for “Best Internships/Career Services.”

Celebrity alumni include comedienne Jane Curtin and Food Network chef Alex Garcia.
