The neighborhood known as The Wood Pile is located in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. This urban community is both residential and commercial. Schools that area students attend include Washington Elementary, Hunter Elementary, Exploris, Ligon Middle, Baker Charter High, and Needham Broughton High.

Shaw University is located south of the community. This University, founded in 1865, is the first historically black college of the South. Shaw is a private college offering many undergraduate and graduate programs. Just to the west of the neighborhood lies the vast North Carolina State University which enrolls nearly 31,000 students and employs over 8,000 faculty. It is known for its majors in education and research, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This university is consistently ranked among the top 50 public universities. St. Augustine’s College and Meredith College are also nearby, adding to the many quality educational options.

Attractions here are plentiful. The Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts is a remarkable venue for theater, opera, and ballet. Lincoln Theater hosts concerts and local bands and is a popular hangout for the younger crowd. Marbles Kids Museum will keep little ones entertained with a hands-on philosophy inspiring learning, imagination, and adventure.

Chavis Park, the area’s largest park, offers plenty of greenspace for enjoying nature. The park features nice walking paths, a community center with basketball courts, and other indoor sports areas, as well as a large locker room. This park features a working, historic carousel built in 1937. Children can take a ride for only one dollar, any day of the week, from sunrise to sunset.
