South Park is a middle-class, residential neighborhood in the 27601 zip code area of Raleigh. The neighborhood is close to highways 50, 70 and 401. The neighborhood boundaries to the north are East Lenor Street, to the south by Hoke Street and Peterson Street, to the east by Chavis Park, and to the west by South Wilmington Street and Camage Street.
South Park covers .391 square miles with houses and apartments. The residents travel by car, carpool and bus. The Raleigh bus system is called the R-Line. The Accessible Raleigh Transportation Program (ART) is available for residents with physical and mental disabilities.
The neighborhood is close to Marbles Kid Museum. The museum has hands-on exhibits and programs targeting elementary and middle school children. North Carolina’s only 3D IMAX Theatre is located here.
The 37-acre Chavis Park with playground, baseball field and picnic areas is nearby. Named after 19th century preacher and educator, John Chavis, the park was used during segregation as one of the first North Carolina urban parks for blacks. Children and families can ride its historic, original carousel with 36 hand-carved horses. The park is ADA approved.
The neighborhood is surrounded by institutions of higher learning. Established in 1865, Shaw University is the first historically black college of the South. St. Augustine’s College is a liberal arts college. Its chapel, St. Agnes Hall and Taylor hall are registered historical landmarks. North Carolina State University, known as the “People’s University,” was founded in 1887. Famous public figures associated with the university include broadcaster David Brinkley, director Cecil B. DeMille, writer Thomas Wolfe and NASCAR champion drivers Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
