The 37-acre Chavis Park with playground, baseball field and picnic areas is nearby. Named after 19th century preacher and educator, John Chavis, the park was used during segregation as one of the first North Carolina urban parks for blacks. Children and families can ride its historic, original carousel with 36 hand-carved horses. The park is ADA approved.

The neighborhood is surrounded by institutions of higher learning. Established in 1865, Shaw University is the first historically black college of the South. North Carolina State University, known as the “People’s University,” was founded in 1887. Famous public figures associated with the university include broadcaster David Brinkley, director Cecil B. DeMille, writer Thomas Wolfe and NASCAR champion drivers Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
