The family-friendly Rialto, Raleigh’s only independent movie theater, started as a grocery store in 1936. The Rialto has a loyal following, and provides nostalgic surroundings for its patrons.
Every Saturday afternoon, residents and visitors take a replica of the Raleigh Trolley through Raleigh’s downtown streets and listen to the historic tales given by the trolley’s tour guides. The trolley ride covers 40 blocks, including stops at the State Capitol, Glenwood South, Joel Lane House, and City Market.
Highlights of the tour may include lunch at a Glenwood South restaurant, shopping at the City Market or strolling through the art museums located along Bicentennial Plaza. Two museums, the North Carolina Museum of History and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences are located along the trolley’s scheduled stops.
The largest venue for outdoor music in the Research Triangle is the Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion at Walnut Creek. The outdoor amphitheater is located southeast of Raleigh and has a capacity for 20,000 people. Performers at the pavilion include musical acts like Johnny Winter, Jimmy Buffett, and Kid Rock.
