Hunters Knoll is situated in zip code 27615 in North Raleigh. The neighborhood boundaries are Durant Road to the north, Camp Durant Road to the east, Hunters Knoll Drive and Bluff Pointe Court to the east, and Deerland Grove Drive, Durant Nature Park, and Camp Durant Lake Number One to the south.
The neighborhood is made up of large single-family homes that are situated along winding roads and cul-de-sacs. The area is surrounded by towering trees in densely wooded areas and attractively landscaped properties. The southern edge of the community sits along a border with Durant Nature Park.
Durant Nature Park consists of 237 acres. There are several different sections of the park, including two lakes (the lower lake and the more remote upper lake), five miles of trails, areas along lake banks or at boathouses for fishing, a playground, a wildlife area, a plant area, and places for picnics.
The wildlife area boasts all sorts of unique birds, including scarlet tanagers, summer tanagers, blue grosbeaks, brown creepers, brown-headed nut hatch, yellow-billed cuckoos, and hummingbirds. There are also dragonflies and turtles in the pond, cicadas, lizards, garden spiders and the Carolina anole, a lizard. The area also has a wide range of different types of trees and plants.
The playground has swings, slides, a sand play area, basketball and volleyball courts, and an open playing field. The five miles of trails run along a stream, through hard wood and pine forests, along two lakes and past all sorts of different plants and native bugs and lizards. Some of the trails will allow bikers to ride on them.
Residents of nearby neighborhoods enjoy walking with their dogs on these trails, and the park connects to the Raleigh Greenway System. The Greenway System now occupies 3700 acres and spans 68 miles.
