On the south side of Raleigh, North Carolina, adjacent to the Lake Wheeler Village Estates, is the small neighborhood of Earle Ridge. Located west of Olde South Road, Earle Ridge is a heavily wooded residential neighborhood with one cul-de-sac lane off Earle Road.
Raleigh, nicknamed the “City of Oaks,” was founded in 1792. Part of Wake County, it is the state’s capital city and home to more than 350,000 residents. Raleigh boasts 4,300 acres of parkland and a greenway trail system of more than forty miles. The neighborhood of Earle Ridge is located minutes from Lake Wheeler and the city’s Lake Wheeler Park.
Lake Wheeler is a notable boating lake in Raleigh. There is a boat launch for private boats available as well as an area with rental boats. Visitors can rent watercraft such as rowboats, canoes, kayaks, and pedal boats for use on the 650-acre lake. The park also has six picnic shelters.
Less than five miles north of Earle Ridge is the Lake Johnson Nature Park. It is a smaller lake than Lake Wheeler, but its parkland is much larger. In addition to boating and fishing, this park has more than three miles of paved greenway trails and two miles of unpaved trails.
The campus of North Carolina State University is about eight miles north of Earle Ridge. On the northwest side of campus is the JC Raulston Arboretum. The arboretum, founded in 1976, sits on eight acres and is maintained by the university. It features flora from more than fifty different countries with plant collections totaling over 5,000. The JC Raulston Arboretum was named for its founder.
Raleigh’s diversity is evident throughout the sprawling city. The downtown successfully mixes historical sites with modern cultural venues like the Convention Center and IMAX Theater. Earle Ridge is a quick ten miles south of downtown Raleigh.
