Bilbro is a neighborhood in Raleigh. It is located In the heart of Wake County, on the east side of Highway 70 and not too far from Highway 50. The community is surrounded by tall, windswept trees and is near beautiful, flowing creeks and rivers and thriving plant life. Bilbro is a typical American small town, rich in history and architecture dating as far back as the Civil War.
The nearby William B. Umstead State Park is highly acclaimed for its recreational opportunities. Located west of the Bilbro community, this park offers a diverse selection of outdoor sports, including fishing, hunting, and camping. It also offers visitors varied trails available for exploration on foot, by bike, or on horseback.
The history of Umstead Park is unique. Native Americans occupied the land during much of the 1700s. Settlers moved in, cleared forests, and set up homesteads, utilizing much of the area as farmland. During tough economic times in the 1930s, federal and state agencies purchased several acres of land, designating it as a recreational area and providing much-needed jobs to local residents. Eventually, Umstead Park grew to become one of the most popular recreational destinations in the Raleigh area.
