The Oakwood community of Pensacola is mainly comprised of apartment-type dwellings and comfortable family homes. The buildings and homes sit on well-maintained lots that boast plants and shrubs native to Florida, such as cabbage palms, saw palmettos and wax myrtle trees. Such vegetation draws the interest of area and migrating birds, including grosbeaks, indigo buntings and mockingbirds.

The community of Oakwood lies south of Longleaf Drive, west of Community Drive, north of Godwin Lane and east of Pine Forest Road. Interstate 10 runs adjacent to the neighborhood on the north side. The community’s convenient location provides locals with access to nearby shopping centers, restaurants and natural sites. University Mall and Cordova Mall are both popular malls in the area.

Families like to visit such area attractions as the Pensacola Museum of Art and the Pensacola Lighthouse. Pensacola Bay, located in the vicinity, offers over 50 miles of shoreline to explore. The Escambia River Wildlife Management Area, located to the northeast, hosts many of the 250-plus bird species that visit the state annually.

Living close to the water allows Oakwood residents to enjoy a variety of water sport activities, including scuba diving, swimming, fishing and boating. Golf is a popular avocation as well. The Marcus Pointe Golf Course, located just southeast of the community, is a local favorite.

The neighborhood lies close to a number of restaurants, as well. Popular eateries for hungry Oakwood residents include Peg Leg Pete’s, the Blue Dot Barbeque, Trigger’s Seafood and the Bonefish Grill.
