Fort George Island Apartments for Rent(hide neighborhood information)
Named for a nearby island of the same name, Fort George Island is a small naval and fishing community east of Jacksonville in Duval County. Surrounded by wetlands to the north, west and south and the Fort George River on the east, the region is best known for a nearby landmark, the historical Kingsley Plantation.
Though Fort George Island is a popular tourist destination, locals enjoy many amenities. Highly rated public schools include Joseph Finegan Elementary School, Mayport Middle School, and Terry Parker Senior High School. Fort George is also home to numerous private campuses, as well as colleges like Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and St. Leo College. Because the community is so close to the ocean, students have access to unique learning opportunities like the Marine Science Education Center.
It’s just a two-mile drive up the island to the 19th-century site of Kingsley Plantation. Another point of interest is the historic St. George Episcopal Church, an ornate gothic-style building. The entire island is located within the scenic Timucaun Ecological and Historical Preserve, a collection of natural marshes and dunes.
To the south, Fort George residents can shop at shoreline boutiques, enjoy a round of golf at the Selva Marina Country Club, or play in the sand at Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach, or any of the numerous shorelines within a 12-mile radius of the island. Locals seeking more active forms of recreation can launch a canoe or boat at Huguenot Memorial Park, or explore the many trails throughout the Timucaun Ecological Preserve.
Fort George Island’s historic landmarks and endless recreation opportunities make the coastal community one of Florida’s hottest neighborhoods.
