Nestled in the foothills of the Diablo Range Mountains yet minutes from downtown San Jose is the community of Berryessa. Homes in the eastern section of the neighborhood are within walking distance of a county park. Berryessa is located in zip code 95132. The Diablo Range lies to the east, the Interstate 680 Freeway runs throughout the center of the neighborhood, and downtown San Jose lies to the southwest.
Within the neighborhood, Penitencia Creek County Park features baseball diamonds, a track, hiking trails, a small pond, and the Berryessa Community Center.
The Sunol Regional Wilderness Park lies to the north of Berryessa. This 6,850-acre park, which consists of former ranch land, is covered in grassland and woodland. Visitors have the opportunity to picnic, hike, backpack, horseback ride, and camp.
To the east of Sunol is the Ohlone Regional Wilderness. This 9,737-acre park includes the 28-mile Ohlone Wilderness trail, which features the 3,817-foot Rose Peak. The trail is open to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, and overnight camping is allowed.
Golfers living in Berryessa have a wide variety of courses from which to choose. The San Jose Municipal Golf Course sits just outside the community to the west. This public, 18-hole course is appropriate for all skill levels. The San Jose Country Club lies to the east of Berryessa. Opened in 1899, this private, 18-hole course is the fourth oldest golf club in northern California.
Berryessa residents enjoy taking a short trip into San Jose and visiting the Winchester Mystery House. This mansion was formerly owned by Sarah Winchester, and is believed to be haunted.
