The neighborhood was developed in the late 1990s and 2000s on 385 large lots. Architectural styles range from two-story Mediterranean to one-story modern, and each home is situated on a landscaped lot surrounded by mature trees. Residents in this gated community enjoy a spacious park, playground, tennis courts, and jogging trails.

Summerglen is in zip code 78260, and the neighborhood is on the east side of the 28,000-acre Camp Bullis Military Training Reservation. The neighborhood entrance is on Wilderness Oaks of Highway 281, which connects to downtown San Antonio. Downtown is filled with restaurants, shops, historic churches, and the River Walk, a network of paths along the San Antonio River.

A new shopping center, the Shoppes at Wilderness Oaks, is being built at the front of the neighborhood, and soon residents will be able to walk to restaurants, bank branches, and coffee shops. Village at Stone Oak, a shopping center two miles from the neighborhood, has a Target and high-end clothing stores. An H.E.B. grocery store and pharmacy also are close by.

The neighborhood is surrounded by public parks and golf courses, including Canyon Spring Golf Club, which is behind Summerglen, and the Club at Sonterra Golf Club. Nearby Stone Oak Park has a playground, covered picnic shelters, and 2.7 miles of trails with exercise stations. McAllister Park, almost 1,000 acres developed in the 1960s, has a dog park and 10 miles of cycling and hiking trails. The Friends of the Park sponsor an annual kite festival there to celebrate the beginning of spring.
