Southside is a rather large San Antonio neighborhood. Its northernmost point reaches to near the border of Stinson Park at East Ashley Road, and its southernmost point stretches nearly to Farm-To-Market Road 536 at Mathis Road. The easternmost point of Southside almost reaches the junction of Farm-To-Market Road 1303 (South) and Farm-To-Market Road 2579, and its westernmost point falls just short of Applewhite Road.
One of the main attractions in this Texas community is Mitchell Lake. Surrounding this 600-acre lake are 215 acres of wetlands and ponds, as well as 385 acres of upland habitat. This is home to the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center, located in a restored house built in 1910.
Numerous activities for local school children and other visitors attract many to this center. These include a variety of activities and events such as such as poetry readings, nature classes, and star gazing. Some visitors come to watch and to identify the wide array of birds.
Horizon Airport sits at the border of these grounds, offering air transportation for the vicinity.
Also in Southside is the San Antonio Missions Historical Park. The history in this park dates to the 1700s. Today, the four missions that make up the park still have active congregations, with each still holding services in its church.
The Southside neighborhood offers residents a variety of lifestyle choices as far as housing arrangements, ranging from settings that are quite rural-like and private to close-knit and quite open, or even from woods and greenery to open prairies. In any case, downtown San Antonio is only about a 20-mile drive from Southside.
