North Central Heritage Neighborhood in San Antonio, TX
North Central Heritage Neighborhood
North Central Heritage offers the best of both worlds: it is close to downtown San Antonio, but it borders the large McAllister Park. This 986-acre park, opened in 1968, offers five miles of paved walking/jogging trails and a covered picnic pavilion complete with BBQ pits. Bikers, as well as runners that prefer a more natural terrain, take advantage of the park’s 10 miles of unpaved trails. There are also baseball and soccer fields at McAllister.
Although not affiliated with the park, the Gunn Sports Park and Texas Transportation Museum are accessible from here as well. If you prefer to avoid the crowds, a handful of smaller parks can also be found in the surrounding area.
North Central Heritage is surrounded by several other popular neighborhoods, including Santa Fe Trails, Gardens at Brookhollow, and Arboretum. Nearby U.S. Highway 281 connects residents to the downtown area, but the surrounding parkland brings you back to nature.
The San Antonio International Airport, situated less than two miles to the south, conveniently accessible via nearby Highway 281. Adjacent to the airport, and still within a few miles of North Central Heritage, is a popular area retail center, the North Star Mall. This indoor mall features more than 200 specialty stores and several restaurants. Among these are The Apple Store, Saks Fifth Avenue, Guess, Sephora, The Cheesecake Factory, Steve Madden, Macy’s, and Armani Exchange. Interestingly, the mall also hosts the world’s largest pair of cowboy boots. At 20 feet long and 40 feet high, you’ll never know what it’s like to walk a mile in these shoes!
The Tower of the Americas is located in the heart of San Antonio. The 750-foot tower is more than 35 years old. It and includes a theater that boasts a 4-D Texas theme. The upscale Chart House Restaurant sits in the top of the tower and is a great place for a night out. It seats up to 250 people, and it revolves at the top of the tower, giving diners a 360 revolving view of the city.
In the area around the Gardens at Brookhollow, there is pool, bingo, bowling, miniature golf and the Embassy 14, a 14-screen movie theater. There are plenty of restaurants in the area as well. Along with the usual fast food places, there are several small cafes, a Smokey Bones barbecue and rib place, an Olive Garden, Denny’s and an IHOP.
