About three miles northwest of Perry Creek is the 237-acre Durant Nature Park. The park’s amenities include a large children’s playground, a basketball and volleyball court, a picnic shelter, and five miles of trails. In addition, visitors enjoy ample fishing on the lakes as well as canoeing.
For the sports enthusiast, Raleigh’s RBC Center is an easy 15 miles southwest of the Perry Creek neighborhood. The RBC Center is home to the Carolina Hurricanes, Raleigh’s professional National Hockey League team. The North Carolina State University men’s basketball team also plays at the RBC Center. The 19,700-seat venue hosts an array of events every year, from concerts to Disney on Ice to the NHL Stanley Cup Finals.
Raleigh’s downtown area is only 10 miles south of Perry Creek and offers more than fine dining and unique shopping opportunities. Downtown Raleigh’s five districts include the Capital District, with several historic buildings, two state museums, and the North Carolina Executive Mansion. The mansion is open to the public. This historic building is the residence of the governor but also has facilities for meetings and formal events. The Executive Mansion was built in 1891 and earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
About two blocks south of the Executive Mansion is Haywood Hall. Built in the Federal Period style in 1799 and named for Raleigh’s first mayor, John Haywood, the historic building and surrounding gardens are open to the public with free admission.
