The Joe Louis Park neighborhood is located east of Downtown Raleigh in the 27610 zip code. Boundaries are East Lenoir Street on the north, Bart Street and Rock Quarry Road on the west and southwest. The east side is a jagged line extending from East Lenoir Street down to Raleigh Boulevard. The south boundary is a short line between Raleigh Boulevard and Rock Quarry Road. The major highways, US 64/I-40, I-440, I-540 and US 1, are easily accessible.
Homes date back to the 1920s; however, builders have come into the neighborhood to build new homes over the last couple of decades. It’s a fairly walkable area with some streets featuring sidewalks and mature trees.
Recreational areas include the Raleigh Country Club northeast of Joe Louis Park and Chavis and Roberts Parks. Chavis Park, 505 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, is west of the neighborhood and is a 37-acre park featuring playgrounds, picnic areas and shelters, a running track, lighted ball fields, a 1937 carousel that can still be ridden for $1, and a community center with recreational and educational activities.
The eight-acre Roberts Park, 1300 E. Martin Street, is located a few blocks north of the neighborhood and features picnic shelters, tennis courts, basketball court, baseball field, playground and a community center with many recreational and arts activities for children through senior citizens.
Neighborhood schools are Hunter Elementary School, Ligon Middle School, Moore Square Museum Magnet School, William G. Enloe High School and Phillips High School.
Downtown Raleigh is divided into arts districts, and Joe Louis Park is nearest to the Moore Square district, which includes numerous restaurants, City Market Produce, Marbles Kids Museum, Lincoln Theatre, 101 Lounge and Cafe, and more. In addition to downtown shopping, the Garner Towne Center Shopping Center is located less than a mile south of the neighborhood.
