Hunter’s Bluff is a neighborhood in Raleigh, North Carolina. It is located within Wake County. It is a residential neighborhood, and a large part of the area is heavily forested. The residences are single-family homes, secluded within the trees. Hunter’s Bluff is bordered on the south by Penny Road and on the west by the Hunter’s Ridge neighborhood. To the south is the Oaks at Meadowridge neighborhood and to the east is Lake Wheeler.
Lake Wheeler is 660 acres in size and is a popular place for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, and sailing. There is also the Waterfront Program Center facility that offers a variety of educational programs and events annually. The lake was created in 1956 and once served as one of Raleigh’s auxiliary water supply lakes. The 150-acre Lake Wheeler Park offers picnic areas, grills, playgrounds, six covered shelters, a sand volleyball court, boat rentals, and concessions.
To the northwest is the Hemlock Bluffs State Nature Area. It is one of the few state nature preserves in the state of North Carolina. It is famed because of it’s unique array of flora and fauna, including the Eastern Hemlock trees and the plant Galax. It is also home to numerous migratory birds, reptiles, insects, arachnids, and mammals. The nature area has a gift shop, education center, and offers many trails and boardwalks, making it simple to explore the area.
Directly west of the nature preserve is Regency Park. The park features the Koka Booth Amphitheater that has hosted such acts as Counting Crows. The theater is located on 14 acres of heavily wooded land and is situated next to Symphony Lake. There is seating for 7,000 people and there are festivals, concerts and movies throughout the year.
