Dogwood Acres is a small but fairly affluent neighborhood northwest of downtown Apex. It is only one block wide and two blocks long with the northern end bordered by Lakeview Drive, the west by Fairview Road, the south by Hunter Street. Hillcrest Road frames the eastern edge. The neighborhood is strictly residential with all services being outside the borders.
Homes are a mixture of single-family structures and apartments, most on large lots with large lawns and plenty of shade trees. This was a fairly rural area until the mid 1990s when a mini-building boom erupted. A handful of homes date back to the 1940s and 1950s. The feeling is still rural and it’s not unusual to find that your neighbor has a sizeable vegetable garden in the backyard.
Baucom Elementary School is on Hunter Street is a half block east of the neighborhood. Apex Middle School on East Moore Street is about a mile to the southeast, and Apex High School is on Laura Duncan Road about a mile to the northeast. The Catholic St Mary Magdalene School on Magdala Place is also available, two miles to the southwest. Nearby churches include the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the Sovereign Grace Church both on East Williams Street, and the Apex Baptist Church on South Salem Street, all within walking distance.
The closest restaurants and shops are along West Williams Street, which also leads to the Beaver Creek Shopping Center at West Williams Street and the Knightdale Bypass. Some of the more well known stores are Target, Lowe’s, and Pet Smart. There is row of restaurants on the northern end of the mall including a Chili’s, TGI Fridays, and IHop.
