Residents will be interested in Historic Oak View County Park, located on Carya Drive, 3 miles from the community. The park is a 19th-century historic farmstead. The purpose of the park is to provide educational programs and events to teach and display the agricultural history of the North Carolina area. The Williams family built the Greek Revival Style Farm house in 1855. They were cotton farmers who worked the farm with ten slaves. Five of the original buildings are preserved at the park including the Plank Kitchen, Main Farmhouse, Carriage House, Livestock Barn, and the Cotton Gin House, all open to visitors. The visitor’s center rotates temporary exhibits throughout the year drawing from an extensive collection of photos and artifacts from North Carolina’s past. The park boasts free admission and is open all year, 7 days a week except on major holidays.
Another great site near Chelmshire Downs is the Thieves Market Mall on Maitland Drive. This is a great place to browse on a rainy afternoon. There are antiques dealers and gift and decorating shops with a wide range of selections and prices.
