Kansas City, Missouri is home to the Swope Park Campus neighborhood, which covers more than 1700 acres. The Swope Park Campus neighborhood’s most notable feature is Swope Park. When compared to other US parks, Swope Park ranks as the twenty-ninth largest. Built on land donated in 1896 by Colonel Thomas Swopes, it is home to the Starlight Theatre, which provides seating for more than eight thousand people (outdoors), the training grounds for the Kansas City Wizards and the Swope Park Rangers. In addition, it is also home to the Kansas City Zoological Park, shelter houses, soccer fields, a swimming pool and two golf courses among other things. One of the golf courses, Swope Memorial Golf Course is a public course and in 1949 was host to the PGA tour event the Kansas City Open Invitational.
Kansas City Zoological Park is located inside the Swope Park Campus area and is placed on slightly more than two hundred acres. An accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, they were voted on of the best zoos in America in 2008. Some of the exhibits include “Australian Animals and Exhibits”, “Pachyderms: Elephants, Rhinos, Hippos”‘; they also have an extensive chimpanzee exhibit. The zoo offers numerous exhibits, shows and a variety of tours as well.
Another prominent feature of Swope Park Campus neighborhood is the Starlight Theatre. There have been some large name performers here including Carol Channing, Robert Goulet, Carol Burnett, Sandy Duncan, Donny Osmond, Ann Margaret to name a few. There have also been a number of Broadway shows including The King and I, Calamity Jane, South Pacific, Man of La Mancha and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast among others.
The Swope Park Campus area is designed for family fun, entertainment and provides several opportunities for both indoor and outdoor entertainment.
