Situated on Minneapolis’ south side, the Keewaydin neighborhood is a prime location for city living. The neighborhood’s interesting name comes from the Ojibwe language, meaning “the home wind.” It is bounded by Minnehaha Parkway on the north and 54th Street East on the south. On the west, it extends to Cedar Avenue South, and 34th Avenue South is its eastern boundary. Keewaydin is in the 55417 zip code area, within Hennepin County.

One of the most prominent features of the Keewaydin neighborhood is Lake Nokomis, most of which falls within neighborhood bounds. Having this popular lake and surrounding parkland right within the community is a huge plus for Keewaydin residents. The lake is one of only three lakes in the city system that offers sailing. There are also two supervised beaches, ball diamonds, playing fields, pedestrian pathways, a playground, and community center. Although there is some green space and amenities surrounding the lake, the big draw here is definitely the water.

As if Lake Nokomis weren’t enough, there are several other options for outdoor enthusiasts right outside of neighborhood bounds. To the east are Minnehaha Park and the Mississippi River. Immediately to the north is Lake Hiawatha, its surrounding parkland, and the Hiawatha Golf Course. If you’d prefer to avoid the crowds and can settle for simple green space and playgrounds over tons of amenities, there are a dozen or so smaller parks within a few miles of Keewaydin as well.

Other nearby attractions include the Minneapolis VA Medical Center on East 54th Street. The Minneapolis – Saint Paul International Airport is located to the south, just outside of the Keewaydin neighborhood. South of that is Fort Snelling, which includes the state park, Snelling Lake, and Fort Snelling National Cemetery. South of that, yet still within a few miles of Keewaydin, is the Mall of America, one of the largest malls in the nation and a big attraction for tourists and residents alike.
