Hiawatha is a neighborhood in Minneapolis. The neighborhood is part of the 55406 and 55417 ZIP codes and is located south of 40th Street and east of Hiawatha Avenue, down to the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. Homes in Hiawatha are varied in age and have a wide number of housing styles. A large majority of the homes were built prior to 1940, providing an excellent bit of history to the neighborhood.

One of the most obvious draws to this community is the abundance of recreation in the area. There are numerous major parks nearby that provide a wide number of amenities to residents. To the south, along the Mississippi River, are three different parks: the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, Hidden Falls Crosby Farms Regional Park, and Minnehaha Park. Situated just below Lock and Dam #1, the parks are a great place to see the power of the Mississippi as it roars over the dam. This is also an excellent place for fishing, recreation, and even exercise. Located within the parks is a trail that travels throughout the area, the Fort Snelling State Trail. This popular trail provides miles of pavement for walkers, runners, skaters, and cyclists.

Next to the parks, off Minnehaha Avenue, is the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center. This large medical center provides health care to the many military veterans in the area.

South of the medical center is the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. This large airport provides a great deal of the travel in the area and is a significant commercial hub for the region. Major airlines provide travel throughout the country and the world from this point. The airport is also the source of many jobs throughout the surrounding area and is located only about a mile from the Hiawatha neighborhood.
