Largely residential, Hawthorne consists primarily of single-family homes. Hawthorne is part of Minneapolis’ Near North community.

Hawthorne extends to North Lowry Avenue/County Road 153 on the north, West Broadway Avenue on the south, North Emerson Avenue on the west, and the Mississippi River on the east. The major attraction of this geographically small community is Farview Park, located at 621 29th Avenue North. Within this well-loved community park sits the Hawthorne Gateway. Created by Norman Andersen and Katherine Schaefer, this work of art mimics a tower that previously stood on the park’s most prominent hill. On top of the sculpture’s columns are perched different animals modeled from copper. The hills of this 21-acre park are famous for offering panoramic views of the city, as well as prime sledding real estate during Minnesota winters. On site, you’ll find athletic fields, a wading pool, and a recreation center. During the warmer months, this park is an ideal location for picnics.

Adjacent to Farview Park is a school, the Nellie Stone Johnson Community School, situated at 807 27th Avenue North. Broadway High School is located along Hawthorne’s southern boundary at 1250 West Broadway Avenue.

You won’t find a great deal else within the community bounds, but several major roadways run north-south through Hawthorne’s east side, connecting residents to the rest of what the city has to offer. These major roads include Interstate 94 and US Highway 52.
