Central Topeka 2 neighborhood covers a large area and includes many home styles. Homes near the university are quite large and elegant, and some are quite eclectic. Homes in other areas tend to be small ranch homes and bungalows. It is a convenient for pedestrians with sidewalks through most blocks. It is also served by public transit.
Central Topeka 2 is bound by Southwest 17th Street, Southwest Washburn Avenue, Southwest 29th Street, and Gage Boulevard. A small part of the neighborhood extends east to Topeka Boulevard.
Big Shunga Park is within the neighborhood, offering a well-maintained trail along Shunganunga Creek. It is a popular walking area. Washburn University is also within the neighborhood, making it easy to take in athletic events, concerts, and performances at WU’s White Concert Hall, and the Mulvane Art Museum. The campus is also a convenient place to walk.
Just east is the Expocenter, where hockey fans can watch a Topeka RoadRunners game. The Expocenter also brings nationally known entertainers to the community. Equestrian events are held here as well.
Central Topeka 2 is close to the Kansas State Capital grounds, site of free summer concerts and other celebrations. A block east of the capital grounds is Kansas Avenue, the route of Topeka’s many parades, as well as shops and restaurants.
A few miles south is Heartland Park, an NHRA track and site of the NHRA Drag Racing National. Heartland has a 1/4 mile drag racing strip, a 2.5 mile championship road course, and 3/8 mile dirt track.
The city’s playground, Lake Shawnee, is not far away. The 410-acre lake provides fishing, sailing, and other water sports. The park features campgrounds, an 18-hole golf course, and disc golf course. The annual Huff and Puff Hot Air Balloon Race is held here too.
