May Park Apartments for Rent

May Park was developed before World War II. It has many of the traditional neighborhood characteristics, such as smaller, irregular shaped lots, sidewalks, tree-lined streets, public transportation, and buildings that are close together and sit at the front of the property lines.

It is known as a stable neighborhood that is in the middle of redevelopment. Homes and businesses have been renovated and other areas have been bulldozed and new buildings and shopping centers built. It is part of the 30901 zip code area.

May Park is nearly a square neighborhood that is bordered on the west by Gordon Highway, on the north by Watkins Street, on the east by E Boundary and on the south by Laney Walker Boulevard. Within its boundaries are Augusta State University and the Medical College of Georgia.

There is a wide variety of housing in the May Park neighborhood. Some of the single-family homes are older, while others are new and modern. Many of the apartment buildings have been remodeled and now include basketball courts, playgrounds, parks and public transportation. Condos have become a popular style of housing, too.

May Park has two of Augusta’s historical cemeteries. Magnolia Cemetery, located on 3rd Street, is where many notable people from the Civil War period are buried. It is the final resting place for seven generals and more than 500 Confederate soldiers. The Cedar Grove Cemetery is where many African-Americans, both slaves and free, are buried. A walk through these cemeteries is an adventure for those interested in the Civil War era.

Augusta’s Exchange Club Fairgrounds is an important part of May Park. Every year in October it houses the Georgia-Carolina State Fair. People enjoy free entertainment, a variety of competitions, agricultural exhibits and rides among other things. The Miss Fair Pageant is one of the highlights of the week.
