Located in the 33603 zip code area, South Seminole Heights is bordered on the north by Hillsborough Avenue, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on the south, Hillsborough River to the west, and Florida Avenue to the east. Approximately 3,500 people live in South Seminole Heights.
The neighborhood has a well-organized and effective homeowners association called South Seminole Heights Civic Association, whose stated mission is “to educate, promote and encourage civic pride and awareness of issues impacting the neighborhood in the area known as South Seminole Heights while revitalizing a sense of community in a safe and healthy residential neighborhood.”
The South Seminole Heights Civic Association lists its five top priorities as: Vacant Properties, Rivercrest Park Safety/Security, Greater Neighborhood Involvement and Participation, Business Development on Commercial Corridors and Beautification Projects and Greenspaces. General membership meetings are held at 7:00 P.M. on the second Tuesday of every January, April, July and October at the Common Ground Church located at 4207 North Boulevard. Individual membership is granted upon the payment of $12.00 for a one-member household and $20.00 for a two-member household.
Some important South Seminole Heights’ events include “Taste of the Heights” in October, “Holiday Home Tour” in mid-December and “Sunday Morning Market,” staged the second Sunday of each month, January through May.
One of the jewels of the South Seminole Heights neighborhood is Rivercrest Park at 4802 North River Boulevard (once named Curtis Hixon Memorial Park.) Brimming with amenities, the park features an excellent playground for children and families, walking paths throughout the park, a canoe launching area, and fishing areas. The centerpiece of Rivercrest Park is a Gazebo, which hosts small concerts and movies where everyone brings a blanket or chair to enjoy the performances.
