University Square Neighborhood

Tampa, Florida’s University Square neighborhood is located in the heart of the medical and educational hubs of North Tampa. This neighborhood is especially popular with college students attending the University of South Florida. The university is not only one of the biggest colleges in the area, but it’s also one of the largest in the state. It is the pride of the region, and it is difficult to drive through town without seeing numerous signs cheering on the Bulls athletic programs. Residents are proud to fly the green and gold colors from their homes, have stickers on their cars, and wear the team logo merchandise.

Several hospitals are also located in the area and have access to the newly educated talent coming out of the various medical programs at the university. University Community Hospital, Shriners Children’s Hospital, and James A. Haley Veterans Hospital provide many of the medical services throughout the Tampa region and bring numerous jobs to the immediate area.

With all the students from University of South Florida in the area, many businesses were opened simply to serve the students. Along Fletcher Avenue and Fowler Avenue, there are a number of restaurants. These restaurants show their pride in the local teams and serve good quality meals at reasonable prices. Catering to students on the move, many places provide fast-food service.

University Square residents also have excellent recreation opportunities. Just a few miles down Fletcher Avenue to the east is Lettuce Lake Park. The park provides access to canoeing, kayaking, and boating along the Hillsborough River, as well as many trails for hiking, running, and cycling. It is also common to see families and students enjoying the picnic areas throughout the park.
