This multi-faceted Florida neighborhood contains residential areas, small businesses, and one of the best high schools in the nation: Paxon School for Advanced Studies. Bordering Allendale to the south is the Woodstock neighborhood, and on the northern boundary is Edgewood Park. Like Woodstock, Allendale is an older community that attracts people who want to live in a suburban environment without the atmosphere of living in the middle of a busy city.

Allendale is situated in the 32254 zip code of Duval County. Downtown Jacksonville is located approximately 3.5 miles to the east-southeast of the neighborhood. Melson Avenue, which extends through the center of the neighborhood, features various businesses to cater to the residents’ needs. Residents have even more choices along the western boundary on Edgewood Avenue North.

The neighborhood consists of areas where businesses thrive and sections where single-family homes are located. It has various styles of architecture. Modest homes border the sidewalk-lined streets. Perhaps one of the most notable structures for which Allendale is known is the Paxon school. Not only has Paxon become a college-preparatory school for grades 9 through 12, it is also one of the few Florida schools that can apply for the Siemens Advanced Placement High School Award.

Along with being an exceptional school, Paxon is located on historic ground. Once called Paxon Field Junior-Senior High School, the school was built on what was once Paxon Air Field. This is the same location where aviatrix Elizabeth Coleman—also affectionately known as “Queen Bessie”—lost her life in a 1926 airplane accident.
