West River is a neighborhood in New Haven, Connecticut. The area is in the western section of New Haven, bordered on the south by the Boston Post Road (also known as Route 1), Day Street, Winthrop Avenue and Davenport Avenue. The western border lies along Marginal Drive and the western edge of West River Memorial Park. Chapel Street is the northern border, and the eastern edge ranges between the Herman Parkway and Dwight Street. West River is just north of Interstate 95 and south of the Wilbur Cross Parkway. Students attend schools in the New Haven Public School District. West River is covered by three zip codes: 06519, 06511, and 06516.
The Hospital of Saint Raphael is on the northeastern edge of the neighborhood. The hospital, which was founded in 1907 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, is now connected to Yale University’s School of Medicine. West River Park is located in this neighborhood, as is the Evergreen Cemetery and Defender’s Park. Two playgrounds are nearby, the Garden Street Playground and the Ann Street Playground.
The West River runs through West River Memorial Park. The park contains a pubic canoe livery that is part of the New Haven Department of Parks, Recreation and Trees. The park provides over 200 acres of land, including a large undeveloped marsh area. Crabbing and fishing are allowed, and there are various trails for hikers and birdwatchers to enjoy. A bike route runs along Marginal Drive and Davenport Avenue. The river is dammed in various spots, and its reservoirs provide some of the public water to the area.
