Farmington Canal runs through the center of the area, as do Dixwell Avenue and Winchester Avenues. The canal, which was built in 1825, covers more than 427 acres, passes under many bridges and through locks and aqueducts, and contains an oft-used rails-to-rails walking, hiking, and biking trail.
The Winchester Repeating Arms Company Historic District was built in the late 1800s as the site for the Winchester Repeating Arms Company’s manufacture of guns. The 75 acres contain 876 historic buildings, including industrial and municipal structures, as well as single-family and multi-family homes built in the same era. The Science Park of Yale University has operated a business incubator at the site since 1981.
