Fair Haven Apartments for Rent(hide neighborhood information)
Fair Haven is a neighborhood in the eastern portion of New Haven, Connecticut, along the west side of the Quinnipiac River. The east side of the river contains the neighborhood known as Fair Haven Heights. The area in the northeast portion is also called Chatham Square. Bordered on the south by the Quinnipiac River, the western edge is on the banks of the Mill River. The northern border flanks Interstate 91, and the eastern border is again bounded by the Quinnipiac River. Main streets through the neighborhood include Grand Avenue, Blatchley Avenue, and Ferry Street.
Originally a fishing and oystering area, outdoor enthusiasts enjoy this area because the river provides canoeing, fishing, boating, and kayaking opportunities. Historic homes dot the area, along with new condos and apartment/condo conversions. New townhouses and apartments are also available here, especially along the river, as are multi-storied, multi-family homes. Warehouses and office buildings were renovated into apartments in this neighborhood as well, especially after the urban renewal program that was initiated in the 1960s.
The commercial district runs along Ferry Street, where restaurants and cafes can be found, some of which offer cuisines from the cultures of residents from Puerto Rico, Mexico and Latin America. Students attend schools in the New Haven Public School District including the John S. Martinez Elementary School, a local magnet school. Workers and students commute on the Connecticut Transit buses. The neighborhood hosts a weekly farmers market called CitySeed. River Street Historic District covers more than 8 acres of commercial and residential buildings that have been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1989, including the Flint Dutee Wilcox auto plant.
