Bernal Heights is a residential neighborhood perched on a hill in the southeastern part of the city. It’s within the city’s Sun Belt, getting less of San Francisco’s famous fog than many other areas.

Bernal Heights is bounded by Highway 280 to the south, San Jose Avenue to the west, Cesar Chavez Street to the north, and Highway 101 to the east. Its proximity to the freeways makes it a convenient location for people who commute south to San Mateo County.

Three parks serve the neighborhood. Bernal Heights Park, at the top of the hill, is open land with an amazing 360-degree view of the city. Holly Park also has a spectacular view, along with a modern playground for kids, a baseball field, a basketball court, tennis courts, and a picnic area. St. Mary’s Playground, which was extensively renovated in 2009, is one of San Francisco’s newest playgrounds. All areas of the new play facility are wheelchair accessible. St. Mary’s Recreation Area, adjacent to the playground, has a gym, tennis and basketball courts, a baseball diamond, and a fenced dog park where dogs can run around off leash. The Recreation Area offers summer day camp for kids and classes and activities for all ages.

The Bernal Heights Library had a 5.7 million dollar renovation, which was completed in 2010. The historic building originally opened in 1940 as part of the Work Projects Administration. Among its most interesting decorative details are gorgeous stencils on the ceiling beams and hanging metal lamps.

The weekly Aleman Farmers Market has been in its present Bernal Heights location since 1947. It’s a favorite of many farmers’ market shoppers and draws people from around the city because of its community atmosphere, affordable prices, and free parking.
