Located on rolling, desert terrain and offering mountain views, the community of Pine Knoll provides residents with a quiet, picturesque refuge. Homes in this sleepy community are surrounded by acres of pine forests.

Pine Knoll encompasses ZIP code 86001. This Flagstaff community is bounded by East Butler Avenue and historic Route 66 to the north, the Interstate 40 Freeway to the east and south, and Northern Arizona University and Milton Road to the west. The area is mostly residential, although it has a variety of businesses, shops, eateries, a hotel, and service establishments, as well as a police department.

One of the many attractive aspects of Pine Knoll is Arroyo Park, which is located in the southern section of the community. This eight-acre scenic park features a baseball field, picnic areas, and plenty of forest in which to roam. The Willow Bend Environmental Center is also located in Pine Knoll. This nonprofit educational center is sponsored by the Coconino Natural Resource Conservation District and provides instruction to the public on conserving natural resources. The center covers subjects such as passive solar energy, alternative-fuel vehicles, energy-efficient office equipment and lighting, composting, and straw-bale housing. Once a month, it sponsors an art walk that displays the works of local students.

Next door and to the west of the neighborhood is Northern Arizona University. Founded in 1899, this educational institution is a research university offering a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees. The school’s staff and students have conducted groundbreaking research such as how to use genetics to understand climate change.
