Rainier View is a neighborhood located in south Seattle. It is part of the Rainier Beach area that ends at the Seattle City limits. The western edge of this community ends in the city limits of Tukwila. Both the Lakeridge and the Skyway neighborhoods of Rainier Beach are located south of Rainier View.
Made up of mostly small, single-family homes, the neighborhood has seen a revival in the last 10 years. Once the site of an electric trolley, Rainier Avenue South is a bustling and international commercial district, with restaurants featuring cuisine from around the world. Martin Luther King Way is also filled with many shops that cater to the diverse international and cultural mix of the residents of this area.
The main streets in the area are Rainier Avenue South and Martin Luther King Jr. Way South. Students attend Rainier View elementary, and Rainier Beach High School. The private, K-12 Bush School is located in this area. The area was a swamp until the Army Corps of Engineers lowered Lake Washington to build the locks to Puget Sound. This enabled better drainage of water in this area and spurred development after 1917.
Numerous parks provide access to the lake shore, and are favored by joggers and cyclists year round. Lake Washington Boulevard South is a scenic way to commute to downtown Seattle. Rainer Boulevard South has many bus routes. The neighborhood is also served by the Sound Transit Link Light Rail Station, which goes to downtown Seattle in the north, and SeaTac airport to the south.
