Virginia Beach, located in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia is the most populous city in the state, hosting 437,994 residents, according to the most recent census.
This resort city has an area of 302 square miles, beginning at the North Carolina state line and extending north to the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. The city is a railroad terminus and therefore is home to a large number of manufacturers. It also supports an agricultural industry, four large military bases and an active tourism trade.
Virginia Beach is one of the fastest-growing cities in the US, enjoying a population increase of almost 50 percent in the decade prior to the turn of the 21st century. Virginia Beach is known for beautiful beaches, a boardwalk and excellent sports fishing. Points of historical interest are the Cape Henry memorial cross, site of the landing of the first colonists in 1607; the Cape Henry lighthouse, circa 1791; and the nation’s oldest brick residence, circa 1636.
Located in the north central portion of Virginia Beach is Lynnhaven, one of the seven original boroughs created with the city of Virginia Beach and formed in 1963. It is considered to begin off the Lesner Bridge, and is centered around the Lynnhaven Parkway.
There are several popular spots in the Lynnhaven area, including Chick’s Beach, frequented by locals and attractive to tourists. The Lynnhaven Pier is a popular spot for fishing and crabbing. Lynnhaven is also host to First Landing State Park, connecting the Chesapeake Bay section of the city to the oceanfront.
The Lynnhaven Mall, one of the biggest malls in Virginia Beach, is an enclosed super-regional shopping mall measuring 1,170,000 square feet. It is not only the largest mall in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, but one of the largest malls on the East Coast. Lynnhaven Mall offers more than 180 stores, including Dillard’s, JCPenney, Macy’s, Barnes & Noble, Dick’s Sporting Goods, H&M and Old Navy. It features a full-sized carousel and children’s play area, a 650-seat food court and a vaulted two-story atrium.
Major employers within the area include Stihl and Naval Air Station Oceana.
