Chester, VA Apartments for Rent

Chester, Virginia was once just a train stop on the way to Richmond. Today it serves as a bedroom community for the larger city. Located near the intersection of State Road 10 and Interstate 95, Chester is home to approximately 21,000 residents; it’s not known how soundly they can sleep, knowing their proximity to “the Lady in Red.”

Virginia State Road 10 is a major suburban highway that runs through Chesterfield County between Richmond and Hopewell. Interstate 95 runs from Richmond to Petersburg. Located just south of Chesterfield Courthouse on Route 10, Wrexham Hall was built by Archibald Walthall sometime between 1770 and 1830.

Although Walthall’s heirs stipulated the family burial ground be left undisturbed, a new owner knocked down the gravestones, and the location of the burial plot was lost. Years later, workers in the field across from Wrexham Hall clearly saw the Lady in Red sitting on the front porch.

She has made her presence known at Wrexham Hall on a regular basis down through the years, in the form of footsteps on the stairs and rocking chairs which rock by themselves in the night.

Factor in the fact that Chester was first settled in 1611, and the fact that it was the site of a major Civil War battle called the Bermuda Hundred, and Chester’s small-town, historic beauty definitely has some spooky underpinnings. Ready to find your Chester apartment? You’ll love living in a city filled with historic sites, gorgeous architecture, fantastic legends — and possibly even a ghostly Lady in Red.
