One of the most significant features of this area is the Oak Hills Country Club. This historic private club was the site of the very first two Texas Opens in 1961 and 1962, which were won by golf legend Arnold Palmer. The design of the course dates back to 1922 and can be attributed to distinguished architect A.W. Tillinghast. This makes Oak Hills one of the oldest private clubs in the U.S., and it has quite the reputation for excellence. In addition to the coveted 18-hole course, Oak Hills also offers a pro shop, a 12-court tennis facility, fitness center, Junior Olympic-sized swimming pool, childcare, youth camps, and multiple restaurants, among other amenities.
Golfing isn’t the only thing that the Oak Hills area is known for. It is also the site of the Southwest Texas Medical Center, University Hospital, Methodist Hospital, St. Lukes Baptist Hospital, Methodist Specialty Transplant Hospital, Christus Santa Rosa Medical Center, and San Antonio Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital, all situated near Medical Drive. Just to the southeast, on the other side of Interstate 410, is the Texan Heart Hospital. Clearly, Oak Hills is the place to be if you work in the health care system or just want easy access to a variety of high-quality health care options.
Shopping is also easy in Oak Hills, with two shopping centers – Crossroads Mall and Crossroads Shopping Center of San Antonio – situated near the Heart Hospital and the intersection of I-10 and I-410. The Oak Hills area offers a little bit of something for everyone, as well as easy access to the rest of the city, via the major roadways that converge in the area.
