Northeast San Antonio borders the inner loop of San Antonio, Texas, at the northeast corner of Interstate 410. It expands to cross a portion of the exterior loop, State Highway 1604, and includes an area to the north of this.
The San Antonio International Airport is located mostly within the borders of Northeast San Antonio. This is the primary airport to serve the city of San Antonio and its outlying areas. The airport spans 2,600 acres in the area where Interstate 410 and U.S. 281 meet.
A variety of shopping is located in Northeast San Antonio, though with its close proximity to the city’s center, some businesses have struggled. The Windsor Park Shopping Center was one of these struggling businesses. It eventually had to close down. A victory for the neighborhood came when a global Web hosting company, a San Antonio-born business, laid claim to the former mall. The plan was in place to transform the mall, with its 68 acres, into the company’s new headquarters. Thus began an influx of new jobs into the community. This project gave San Antonio the top award in Texas’ annual economic development competition for 2008.
A good number of parks also populate Northeast San Antonio. One of these is a one-of-a-kind park, developed by philanthropist Gordon Hartman. The 25 acres of “Morgan’s Wonderland” was sparked by the needs of his daughter, and was developed so that she and others with special needs could enjoy the park with their families.
Across Thousand Oaks Road from this park is Heroes Stadium. This high school stadium seats 11,000, and is home to one of the state’s largest high school video scoreboards.
