East Side San Antonio has been experiencing revitalization since 2009 when city leaders began exploring options to bring more businesses into the region. These will add to the plethora of parks and attractions that are already in the area. East Side San Antonio is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, rich in history and historical buildings, but also the home of some of the city’s newest structures.

Wheatley Middle School is not just a school but also an historical landmark. The school is named for Phillis Wheatley, an ex-slave who was the first African American to publish a book of poems. Students in grades nine through twelve attend another school named for a famous person. Sam Houston High School recently added a “Hi-Tech” which specializes in training students for manufacturing, engineering, and technology programs.

While East Side is rich in history, one of the newest gems of San Antonio is located there. AT&T Center was built in 1993 and is home to basketball’s San Antonio Spurs, one of the best professional sports teams in any sport. The team has the best winning record in sports at 69.6 percent. Even though the Spurs moved out of the Aladome, the stadium is still the host of one of college football’s most exciting games. That Alamo Bowl pits rivals from the Big 10 Conference and the Big 12 Conference against each other each year.

The area is rich in recreation spots where families can relax. Martin Luther King Park has more than 40 shelters for a picnic and a creek for fishing. There are also two tennis courts, a lighted basketball court, and a lighted softball field. Golfers can take a swing at Willow Spring Golf Club, located across from the AT&T Center.

The East Side is convenient to downtown San Antonio via I-10 or I-35. Commuters who work downtown will find their journey short—about 10 to 15 minutes. East Side is a great neighborhood for those who want comfortable suburban living close to the downtown area.
