OST/South Union is a compilation of neighborhoods in south central Houston, inside Loop 610. The zip code is 77021 and the area is located in Harris County, Texas. The boundaries are Old Spanish Trail to the north, Interstate 610 to the south, State Highway 288 to the west, and Mykuwa Road to the east. The OST/South Union neighborhood is just over 4 square miles and has over 20,000 residents. The area has many single-family homes and apartment communities.

Metro bus and rail service was added in recent years with the addition of a Metrorail station in Palm Center. William P. Hobby Airport is located a few miles southeast and was Houston’s primary airport until the opening of George Bush Intercontinental Airport in 1969. Houston Hobby still serves the city as a secondary airport handling domestic flights, and as a regional charter base for corporate and private aviation.

OST/South Union is within Houston Independent School District, which offers six public schools and one private school. A major university, Texas Southern University, is located just to the north of OST/South Union. Texas Southern University is one of the nation’s largest HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities.) Today, this university has a diverse faculty and student body, with students attending from around the U.S and the world. This university offers an impressive array of undergraduate and graduate programs, many unique to the area.

The Old Spanish Corridor, the northern boundary, has been revitalized with new commercial developments in recent years. Also, deteriorated properties on the eastern side of OST/South Union were purchased and redeveloped by the Shrine of the Black Madonna, a museum, and a bookshop dedicated to the African-American community’s contributions to American culture and history.

Zollie Scales Park is located on the west side of OST/South Union and was named after a local community activist who fought to get the area many city services.
