Independence Heights Neighborhood

A historic neighborhood in northeast Houston Texas, Independence Heights was first settled by African-American families in 1908. In 1915, it became a city that was completely owned and operated by African-Americans, a significant historical event. Although Independence Heights was annexed by Houston in 1929, the city still has a strong sense of community. The Independence Heights Redevelopment Council works toward historic preservation.

Independence Heights is located north of the 610 Loop, north of the Greater Heights area. Independence Heights is five miles northwest of downtown, on the west side of North Freeway. Independence Heights Park and Community Center offers a playground, basketball court, pool, ball field, and lighted tennis courts.
