South Dallas/Fair Park is located just east of the Historic District in the heart of downtown Dallas. It lies between the E. R. L. Thorton Freeway and the North Central Expressway. The boundaries of the neighborhood are Robert B. Cullum Boulevard to the west, South Pacific Avenue to the north, and South Fitzhugh Avenue to the East.
Fair Park is an important neighborhood because it is home to so many important landmarks and attractions. It consists of 277 acres of museums, recreational, and educational attractions. It also served as the city’s Fairgrounds as far back as 1886.
South Dallas/Fair Park is home to the world’s largest collection of 1930s Art Deco Architecture, something that’s sure to appeal to architecture aficionados. These buildings were built for the Texas Centennial Exposition in 1936. Fair Park is also home to the largest Ferris Wheel in North America.
Museums within the confines of Fair Park proper include the African American Museum, the Museum of Nature and Science, the Texas Discovery Gardens at Fair Park, the Music Hall at Fair Park, the Fair Park Band Shell, the Dallas Historical Society, the Dallas Wind Symphony, and the Cotton Bowl. The Women’s Museum is located at the westernmost edge of the neighborhood, and the Second Avenue Recreation Center is located a short way southeast of the neighborhood.
Several restaurants are in the area, including fast food, several small cafes, barbecue, and seafood. The DART (Dallas Area Regional Transit) Green Line serves Fair Park, where there is also a station. Dallas buses offer bike racks.
